Before we begin each new website project with a small business we decide whether or not they require a content management system (CMS). What is a CMS you ask? Well a CMS is a piece of software, not unlike an app for your phone, or software for your desktop computer that we install on your website, that allows you to manage (add/edit/delete) content from any web connected device.
For example, changing a picture, editing text or adding a new page can be accomplished easily with a CMS whereas with a traditional website an update of this nature would require a call or email to your friendly webmaster.
Here are some awesome features of the CMS we use:
- Mobile Access. Edit and post new content with mobile apps for phones and tablets.
- SEO Friendly: The page code and overall structure is optimized for search engine indexing.
- Plugin Support: Adding website features is easily done with plugin support.
- Visual Editor: Edit page and post content (images and copy) with an easy to use visual editor.
- Post via Email: Compose an email to your CMS and it will post the contents immediately online.
- Social Connections: Tie the CMS into your social network profiles to create a seamless publishing strategy.
There are some things you need to consider before choosing a CMS, such as:
- A CMS will typically add a small amount of cost to the overall project. Consider however that if you factor in update fees over several years, it more than pays for itself over the lifetime of your website.
- A CMS like your operating system requires periodic updates and security patches to keep your content safe and site running correctly. While we do not require clients to update their CMS, you should budget a few hours each year to keep things updated and protected from spammers and hackers.
- A CMS will work best if you plan ahead what content on your site will grow. A website can have a CMS installed but still be limited in it's flexibility if you do not anticipate this growth. A detailed plan of how content will or might grow in the future is key to maintaining this flexibility.
On a final note, to our clients with a COLEwebdev website but without a CMS, we can take your static website and install a CMS underneath, without having to change or redesign your site. Call us today to discuss your options.
Examples of CMS websites: Outermost Harbor, CCHRA, Agway of Cape Cod, Little Life Preservers and many more. Contact us today for more examples.
