Recently I presented to a small group of Cape Cod business owners in Hyannis a workshop on social media marketing. Today  when we say social media most mean Facebook which with 600 million plus users is the clear leader. However as I reminded the audience if this was 2007 I would be talking about the clear leader and booming social media powerhouse ... MySpace. What does this all mean? Focus your networking energies on social participation on the hottest networks (Facebook, Twitter) but invest your time and money on your own website which is an entity that won't simply fall out of fashion as did MySpace.
Keys to an effective Facebook presence:
Customization: Add you logo, photos, business information to your business fan page. Once you've done this, work on adding custom tabs (FBML) to your page which act like pages on your website. These custom tabs allow you to delivery additional messages or promotions to your fans.
Participate: Having a presence on Facebook is not enough to achieve the results your business needs. Participate on Facebook by posting updates, commenting on other posts and sharing media and news with your followers.
Website Integration: Start by simply adding a button to your Facebook page on your website. Once you've done that, expand your integration by adding Like buttons, and an activity feed to closer tie your website with what is happening on Facebook.
Consistency: The single most important element in all of this is to make your social marketing efforts regular, and consistent. Develop a schedule for posting content to Facebook, and make it a habit to check every day or several times a week and participate by posting and commenting.
