Security

As our lawmakers and political leaders discuss the extension of the Patriot act, our attention in the last week has turned to security as well. We're not talking about national security but rather the safety of our client websites, and the data they contain.

Security is something as technologists we take very seriously. Constantly we are giving thought to how we can better secure every website we build. The realilty is that most security issues come down to comabatting spam and spammers. From email spam, to blog comment spam, to link stuffing spam we see it all.

This brought us to consider sharing the following security tips related to online business that will keep the bad guys at out:

1. Use secure passwords. This is by far the single most effective way at stopping intruders. Use capitalization changes, numbers and punctuation to make it harder to guess or brute force attack. This applies to email accounts, online software accounts and even Windows/iTunes accounts.

2. Use different passwords. One password to rule them all is an old favorite but it's dangerous as access to one system will grant a hacker access to several more if you share passwords.

3. No stickies or cheat sheets at your desk. While a hacker may be miles away, a theif might be right around the corner waiting to smash and grab your office laptop. Keep your passwords out of your physical world too.

4. Regular security scans online and off. If your computer or website is infected is can spread accross multiple accounts as you interact with either. Active scanning of your office computers and website, as well as regular security reviews by a professional can make the difference.

5. Be aware. Simply visting your website regularly, looking at your email outbox for suspicious activity, Googleing your business name and review any unexpected results, and being ware of your computer's default behavior is enough to alert you to problems automated software might not catch.

Also be aware that security on your website shouldn't effect the user's experience. Security measures meant to keep out automated bots many times will confuse and irriate users. While good security is essential online, it's always wise to implement only features which will benefit your business process.
