How did you get started with your business? Sonja Sheasley, President and Co-founder of Bum Boosa Bamboo Products, designed the first product, bamboo baby wipes, after three years of research. Her experience with aromatherapy and herbalism, along with a knack for research helped her get this product ready for market. She then brought in Vice President and Co-founder Polly Goddard to help launch the product. Bum Boosa Bamboo Products was officially launched in July 2009. Within in the first few months of business, we added Bum Boosa Bamboo Diaper Rash Ointment and Bum Boosa Bamboo Bathroom Tissue to the line of eco-friendly products made from the renewable, sustainable resource of bamboo.

Tell us about the business: We sell personal care products made with the renewable, sustainable resource of bamboo. Our Bum Boosa Bamboo Baby Wipes are biodegradable (unlike 80% of wipes on the market) and made with a natural solution including Lavender and Sweet Orange essential oils known for their natural antiseptic and anti-viral properties.
Bum Boosa Bamboo Diaper Rash Ointment is made with bamboo silk powder and a variety of herbs and essential oils known for their natural soothing and healing properties. A little goes a long way!
Bum Boosa Bamboo Bathroom Tissue is made with 100% bamboo processed with the mechanical pulping process. It does not leach BPAs into the groundwater like toilet paper made with recycled materials. It is packaged in a box made from recycled materials – no plastic!
We also have Eco-Gift Baskets for babies and logo wear for babies made from bamboo – so soft and cozy!
For each individual item sold, we plant a tree with Trees for the Future – by the end of 2010, we will have planted almost 20,000 trees! We also offset more than 100% of our calculated carbon emissions annually.
Tell us about yourself: Sonja is a mom to two young boys and was a teacher prior to striking out on her own. Her passion for making natural products, aromatherapy, and herbalism is what drew her to start this company. Polly is a mom to one teenage boy and managed environmentally-focused non-profits for several years before taking the leap into this venture. Her interest in the environment and in getting infants started off right with pure, natural products is what drew her to forming a partnership with Sonja. Sonja and Polly run every aspect of the business at this time.
What do you love about your business? We love working for ourselves and being in control of everything that the company puts forth. We love being able to make decisions based on our own values and building a company with a conscience in a world where green-washing or unethical behavior or standards is all too common. We love that we touch every product before it goes out to our customers and that any customer with a question gets to talk to us, the owners and decision-makers. We love that in addition to being entrepreneurs, we consider ourselves students and educators within the green marketplace. We love that we can sleep at night knowing that every product that we put our logo on is safe for the planet and the skin it touches and that we have nothing to hide from our consumers. We especially love when we hear from satisfied customers who love our products and keep coming back! What are some ways that you promote your business? We blog, use Facebook, do print advertising in targeted publications, participate in giveaways and reviews with bloggers, do outreach events, promote sales and send out product information and free skincare recipes through our eNewsletter, submit press releases, donate items to fundraisers, provide discount shopping codes to relevant groups (such as breastfeeding groups etc) and keep our website as up to date as possible. We believe in grassroots marketing and it has served us well!
