Ten years after launching a business from a spare desk in the corner of their house, Josiah and Desiree Cole are celebrating the 10th anniversary of COLEwebdev.
Founded in 2006, COLEwebdev is a small, highly focused Cape Cod website design and development firm that specializes in close relationships with clients to deliver business results via the web. The Coles seek clients who are passionate about their business, who want to grow and are committed to working with local tech experts to achieve their goals.
“When we started, there weren’t nearly as many website design companies as there are today,” says Josiah. “Now you can throw a rock and hit someone who says they can build a website.”
The Coles’ goal was to offer a more affordable option for people who needed a website designed and built. They’ve built their business primarily through word-of-mouth referrals.
“Most of our clients are on the Cape,” says Desiree. “We like these personal relationships where we can meet with them face to face to discuss their online identity.”
In 2012, the Eastham-based company won Cape Cod SCORE’s “Build a Better Mousetrap” award, which honors companies that have survived the critical first five years and appear to be headed for long-term success. Josiah was recognized by Cape and Plymouth Business magazine’s “40 under 40” award in 2013, and Desiree was a “40 under 40” award-winner in 2014.
The parents of two daughters, the Coles are “committed to the community,” says Desiree, who is the president of the Eastham Chamber of Commerce. “Having a strong community presence is key to building our business, and supporting the year-round Cape economy. Volunteering our time and donating web services to local non-profits keeps us connected and grounded.”
Desiree refers to Josiah as the company’s “resident geek. He’s always keeping current on the latest web technologies.” Desiree focuses on providing business development and creative marketing for their clients. “We do a lot of networking and we talk about our clients, we feature them on our website and in our newsletter. We don’t just build a web site and say, see you later. We build a partnership that lasts for years.”
