website-accessibility

Website accessibility is important but can be time intensive to implement. There’s a temptation to take shortcuts, and recently we’ve been seeing these automated, accessibility solutions proliferate.

The traditional process of making a website accessible or compliant with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) guidelines is to use tools to scan, and then remedy found issues with its structure or content. This is done by hand on a page-by-page basis, and for large websites can become quite tedious and expensive if you’re paying a professional.

Enter Accessibility Widgets. Offering a “magic wand” of sorts to solve your accessibility requirements, these widgets offer users the ability to modify the design of your website (colors, fonts, sizes) to meet their specific needs.

While a wonderful and convenient solution on its surface, the execution is often lacking and over-reliance on a band-aid approach is not ideal. Not to mention it contradicts the principles of making a website truly accessible.  You should be creating accessible content by default!

Our advice: Do the hard work and scan each page to make certain it meets or exceeds WCAG 2.1 (soon 2.2) guidelines. Once you repeat this process just a few times, accessibility becomes easy and just another part of how you create content (like SEO!)

If you want to offer an additional layer of accessibility features, add a widget to allow users to further alter the content and design. However, it’s important to test the widget to make sure it doesn’t interfere with the use of your website (check on mobile, tablet, and desktop!)
