Why do I see Lorem ipsum on my website design proof?

Nov 4, 2009 | News

This is a question that we have had from a few of our clients recently. When we build a design proof for a client we use placeholder text, usually latin, which is informally called “Lorem ipsum” text. The purpose is to prevent the client from focusing on the copy and instead focus on the design elements.

We have been using Lorem ipsum placeholder text for more than 13 years on our design proofs. If you look up the definition of Lorem ipsum on Wikipedia you will find that many publishers, graphic designers and web designers use this text as part of a visual presentation.

Lorem ipsum does not actually have any real meaning, it is derived from Latin, but the words have letters removed and others put in, making the text, pretty much gibberish (which is the point!)

A sample of Lorem ipsum text is:

So next time you see this copy on a document or design , it is not meant to be read or translated, it is there as placeholder text.
